Outdoor First Aid Course Overview

This Outdoor First Aid qualification is designed to meet the needs of those working away from immediate assistance (more than 30 mins) in the remote and rural regions of the UK. This Outdoor First Aid qualification is externally regulated and meets the standards to appear upon the national qualifications frameworks of England and Wales.  This course is recognised throughout the UK and is the course of choice for experienced practitioners who use the outdoors.

It is suitable for workers in rural and remote settings and will maintain the license to practice for those with Outdoor National Governing Body Instructor awards.

The course meets the requirements of the Institute for Outdoor Learning Statement of Good Practice for Outdoor First Aid Training at Band 3. This is hosted upon the Institute for Outdoor Learning website.

This course is suitable for anyone who works or plays in the outdoors whether group leader or lone walker/mountain biker/orienteer/ etc. It satisfies the requirements of the IOL and is suitable for most Outdoor Instructor Awards (ML, SPA, BCU, BASI, etc). It is also suitable for scout leaders, DofE, conservation volunteers, foresters, Forest School leaders, etc.

This qualification is part of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and is regulated by OfQual (the official regulator of qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland).

Total Qualification= Credits: 2

Guided Learning Hours: 16 minimum

Outdoor First Aid Course Content

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:

Unit 2 Outdoor Incident Management

  • Understand the scope of first aid in the outdoors
  • Interpret vital sign information whilst responding to an emergency incident in the outdoors
  • Respond to an incident involving an unresponsive casualty with normal breathing, in the outdoors
  • Respond to an incident a choking casualty in the outdoors
  • Respond to an incident involving a casualty who is bleeding and in shock in the outdoors

Unit 1 Emergency Action

  • Apply incident managment principles in the outdoors
  • Respond to an incident involving limb injuries in the outdoors
  • Respond to an incident involving head, neck & torso injuries in the outdoors
  • Respond to various medical conditions  or sudden illness in the outdoors (heart attack, stroke, diabetes, asthma etc.)
  • Respond to various from the effects of hot and cold environments in the outdoors

Outdoor First Aid Assessment

Assessment method:

Ongoing practical assessment by the course trainer(s) throughout the duration of the course, both indoors and outdoors in a low stress environment.

Outdoor First Aid Course Duration

Normally (2 long days) but can be broken down into smaller sessions with a minimum of 16 hours contact teaching hours (excluding lunch and breaks).

Outdoor First Aid Course Package

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:
  • Minimum of 1 trainer per 12 attendees.
  • Interactive hands on practical training.
  • One AED training unit per 2 attendees.
  • One CPR training manikin (Adult) per attendee.
  • Easy to follow individual course manual.
  • A recognised qualification certificate with 3 years license to practice.

Outdoor First Aid Certification / Revalidation

On successful completion of the course, attendees will be issued with the Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid RQF qualification valid for 3 years.

Revalidation is by attending the same course before the qualification expires.

Outdoor First Aid Course Cost

On-site courses can be held at your own venue, starting from £850 + VAT for up to and including 12 attendees.

Individual places on our open courses held in the South West region start from as little as £115 + VAT per attendee.
