Paediatric First Aid - Blended Learning Course Overview

This course is for those who might have to identify and manage emergency situations or manage minor everyday occurrences when looking after young children. This qualification meets Ofsted requirements for those working in early years settings and uses the criteria for effective paediatric first aid training found in Appendix 1 of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Practice Guidance document.

The current EYFS statutory framework requires at least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate to be on the premises or outings at all times when children are present.

RQF / OfQual Recognition

This qualification is part of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and is regulated by Ofqual (the official regulator of qualifications in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

This qualification is built from 2 mandatory units of assessment.

Unit 1 Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF)

  • Unit 1= Credits: 1

Unit 2 Managing Paediatric Illness, Injuries and Emergencies (RQF)

  • Unit 2= Credits: 2

Paediatric First Aid Course Content

Meets all the EYFS guidance for effective paediatric training.

  • Training is designed for workers caring for children in the absence of their parents.
  • The training leading to a certificate, or a renewal certificate is a minimum of 12 hours.
  • The first aid certificate should be renewed every 3 years.
  • Resuscitation and other equipment include baby and junior models, as appropriate.
  • Training covers appropriate contents of a first aid box for babies and children.
  • Training should include recording accidents and incidents.

The course covers:

  1. Planning for first aid emergencies involving babies and children
  2. Dealing with emergencies involving babies and children
  3. Resuscitating babies and children
  4. Recognising and dealing with shock in babies and children
  5. Recognising and responding appropriately to anaphylactic shock in babies and children
  6. Recognising and responding appropriately to electric shock in babies and children
  7. Recognising and responding appropriately to bleeding in babies and children
  8. Responding appropriately to burns and scalds in babies and children
  9. Responding appropriately to choking in babies and children
  10. Responding appropriately to suspected fractures in babies and children
  11. Responding appropriately to head, neck and back injuries in babies and children
  12. Recognising and responding appropriately to cases of poisoning in babies and children
  13. Responding appropriately to foreign bodies in eyes, ears and noses of babies and children
  14. Responding appropriately to eye injuries in babies and children
  15. Responding appropriately to bites and stings in babies and children
  16. Responding appropriately to the effects of extreme heat and cold in babies and children
  17. Responding appropriately to febrile convulsions in babies and children
  18. Recognising and responding appropriately to the emergency needs of babies and children with chronic medical conditions, including epilepsy, asthma, and diabetes
  19. Recognising and responding appropriately to meningitis and other serious sudden illness

Paediatric First Aid Assessment

Learning is proven via the following assessment method:
  1. 20 question multi-choice answer paper at the start of the practical day, to ensure theoretical knowledge has been retained during the e-learning element of the course.
  2. Ongoing practical assessment by the course trainer/s throughout the duration of the course in a low stress environment.

Paediatric First Aid Course Duration

  1. 6 Hours e-learning which must be completed prior to attendance on the practical day, followed by 1 Days practical training and assessment.
  2. With 12 hours minimum total guided learning hours.

Paediatric First Aid Course Package

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:
  1. Minimum of 1 trainer per 12 attendees
  2. Interactive hands-on practical training
  3. One AED training unit per 2 attendees
  4. One CPR training manikin (Adult) per attendee.
  5. Easy to follow individual course manual.
  6. A recognised qualification certificate with 3 years license to practice.

Paediatric First Aid Certification / Revalidation

On successful completion of the course, attendees will be issued with the Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid RQF certificate valid for 3 years. Revalidation is required every 3 years by re-attendance and successful completion of another course.

Please note that the new current Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage now mentions that early years providers should consider whether Paediatric First Aiders need to undertake Annual Refresher training, during any three year certification period to help maintain basic skills.

On-site courses can be held at your own venue, starting from £750 + VAT for up to and including 12 attendees.

Individual places on our open courses held in the Southwest region start from as little as £85 + VAT per attendee.
